Transition

Moving from high school to college is an exciting and challenging time.  Students enjoy the nature of Canberra's unique college system.  Students have greater independence compared to high school - but with that independence comes greater responsibility.  Teachers are known by their first name.  Students select all the classes they will undertake and make a personal commitment to attend and complete assessment tasks.  College is also a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and try new things. Learn to surf, go rock-climbing, learn about the great philosophers, develop your debating skills, contribute through the SRC - find out about yourself and others.  Do all of this and more at college - and remember, there is always someone to turn to for advice.

The college also has an extensive network of student support services.  Each student is a member of a small STEP (Student Enrichment Program) group, with a teacher who offers pastoral care, course advice and broader college information.  We also have a team of Year Advisors, Careers Advisors, work experience coordinators, as well as a counsellor and psychologist who are all available to assist students as they progress through college.

We recently asked for comments about college life from current students, and these are some of their responses:

"College is great.  There is so much more freedom than in high school - but you need to organise yourself and get the work done."

"My best advice to new students is: go to class and get involved in what's going on."

"The chips from the canteen are awesome.  Their healthy stuff is good too, I guess.  Balance is important, right?"

"There is so much to choose from when selecting classes.  But ask your teachers for help.  They know what's going on."

"Take advantage of the Library when you have lines off.  That's what I realise now."

"The people in Student Services are great.  If you have any questions or concerns go straight to them.  They're so friendly and they will tell you what you need to know."

"Start your assignments as soon as you get them.  Seriously.  Things get really busy at times, but if you've started early then you'll be fine."

"The building is weird, totally weird. But its quirkiness is part of its charm.  You'll get lost, but just ask someone and they'll show you the way."

"If you need help, ask your teacher - and do it as early as possible."

"Some of the language used in college is weird at first, but you just need to ask a teacher and they can explain it.  Majors and Minors freaked me out at first, but it's so straight-forward now."

"College is so much bigger than high school.  I was scared initially, but everyone's in the same boat.  There are so many students from so many different schools (and countries) here - but it's great, I've made heaps of new friends."
