Emergence of Humankind Excursion
On Thursday the 22nd of May, students from the Emergence of Humankind class attended an excursion at ANU. The first section of the afternoon had all students making stone tools for the first time. This was accompanied by a two hour workshop from Dr Peter Hiscock, Reader in Archaeology at ANU. Students handled stone tools made by Neanderthals over 350,000 years ago and looked at the first colonisation into Australia and some stone tool technologies from the last 50,000 years.
Students were then given a tour of the classics Museum by Dr Peter Londey and had the opportunity to get course advice on Ancient History courses on offer at ANU. Lastly, students stayed on for the final lecture in the Archaeology course given by Dr Peter Hiscock on Scientific Archaeology. Students really enjoyed the experience and the lecture and both of our guides on the day complimented the students on their interest and maturity whilst at ANU. This has led to Dr. Hiscock agreeing to attend the college for a guest lecture in July on Indiana Jones and the media portrayal of historians and archaeologists.

Students argue at Moot Court Competition!
Four Canberra College students are representing the college in the Bond Uni. Regional Moot Court Competition this week. ( Caitlin S, Ella P, Stephanie C and Peter K ) The students have been working very hard on preparing to deliver both a written and oral appeal to a decision of a lower court that decided that a high school is not responsible for the retaliation of a victim against his bully. They will argue that the breakdown of legal responsibility largely, if not entirely, remains with the school because it had prior knowledge both of the bullying and the likelihood that the victim would snap and commit the assault, but that it did little, if anything, to attempt to avoid either situation.
Adelaide Tour – Drama
Ian Walker, Alanna Maclean and the Drama Production students recently attended the Adelaide Fringe Festival to perform “A Place for Poppy”. Performances at the Adelaide festival have become an annual event for current and previous Drama students. It is a fantastic festival to showcase the quality of work produced by Canberra College students as well as an opportunity to attend up to 11 theatre performances. This year students attended the Adelaide Festival/Fringe/Writers’ Week and the WOMADelaide Writers Festival.

Canberra College Carnival The Canberra College Carnival was held on Wednesday February 20. This day provides an opportunity for students to mix with staff and other students in an informal and engaging way. All students attended 3 workshops and engaged in activities on offer during the lunch break. All faculty areas offered workshops including: dance and art workshops, maths games, chess, spelling horse races, table tennis round robin and becoming a barrista in an hour! All these sessions were filled to capacity and students clearly enjoyed the broad range of activities on offer. At lunchtime students listened to local band Casual Projects, romped on the Jumping Castle, engaged in tug o’war bouts on the oval, queued up for the sausage sizzle or visited the shopfronts including SIPS (Students to Industry), the RSPCA and Woden Youth Centre. |
