Thursday 7th August: All students - ACT Careers Market

The morning lessons will be cancelled (Lines 7,5,5) and all Canberra College students (Years 11 & 12) will be attending the annual ACT Careers Market at the Australian Institute of Sports. Entry is free and the Department of Education and Training will be supplying free bus transport from Canberra College to the AIS and back.
The Careers Market will feature representatives from most Australian and some New Zealand universities, CIT and various local and regional private training institutions, local and regional employer groups, and job agencies and apprenticeship bodies.
PLEASE RETURN YOUR PERMISSION NOTE TO THE FRONT OFFICE (it was included in the envelope with your report, otherwise there are spares in Student Services)


Attention all students!

SHLIRPS – Sexual health and lifestyle clinic  -  Week 7 AND WEEK 8

On Friday 5th September there will be a FREE BBQ for ALL students to promote the clinic which will run in the College for two full days.
The Sexual Health and Lifestyle Clinic will be held on Monday and Tuesday 8th and 9th September.

The clinic will be located in Student Services (which will close for the two days while the clinic is running).
 
Students under 16 years of age must provide a permission note from their parents to participate.  These will be available in the next newsletter.


Theory of Knowledge Student Conference Day. Tuesday 12th August 9:30am-1pm 

Canberra College TOK students will join 500 other students from across ACT Schools to hear British ethicist Dr Peter Vardy address students on a range of contemporary issues such as: Sexual ethics, cloning, and animal rights.

Theory of Knowledge students who wish to attend need to pay $10 at the Front office ASAP.  See Anni Medway for more information.


Humanities Sydney Tour

From 27/8/08 (Wednesday) to 29/8/08 (Friday) - Week 6 of Semester 2 
Itineries are in the process of being distributed through English classes. Secure your spot by paying $100 by the end of the term to the front office. Be quick if you want a place.


WRITERS CAMP

Our budding creative writers will be attending a two day intensive writing camp out at Birrigai Outdoor Centre with our writing teachers Kylie Seluka and Helen Uren-Randall. This camp offers an excellent opportunity for  creative writing students to generate ideas for their writing folios which form a major part of their assessment this semester. Excursion forms and details of the program will be given in classes but monies are payable at the Front Office asap. The cost is $95 and this includes all meals, materials and accommodation.

Jean Baptiste Moliere's classic satire of the medical profession will have audiences in stiches when an eccentric, wealthy man crippled by severe hypochondria tries to marry his daughter off to a physician just to always have a doctor around.

Come and laugh at this famous French farce (performed in modern day English) as our hypochondriac spends all of his money on his imaginary ailments, see romantic twists evolve with a cast of characters comparable to that of a dysfunctional family interact.

The Imaginary Invalid presented by the Canberra College Theatre production and performance class. Directed by Drama teacher Ian Walker and student Director Anna Neal


The AST Camp will be held at CIT Bruce Campus on Wednesday 23rd July 2008 from 8:45am – 3.45pm 

To further prepare our students for the AST, Canberra College in conjunction with Hawker College have organised a focus day. The day will comprise of various workshops enabling students to work through AST problems and discuss strategies with their peers and staff facilitators.  There will be free busses available from the college. Permission notes and information has been given to students through STEP groups or sent home. Attendance is expected for students intending to sit the AST exam.


Drug And Alcohol Information Evening For Parents

The Alcohol and Drug Program as part of Drug Action Week, a national incentive, would like to invite all parents, guardians and teachers to an information evening to raise awareness of alcohol and drug issues that may affect our children. The theme of Drug Action Week will be ‘Alcohol is a Drug Too’ so there will be an emphasis on teenagers and binge drinking.   The information sessions will include general education and awareness-raising of alcohol and illicit drug issues and their physical and mental impact on young people. There will be the opportunity to ask questions, both throughout the presentation as well as informally with workers present.    The sessions will be held on:

Monday 23 June from 6-9pm at Legislative Assembly, London Circuit, Civic

Tuesday 24 June from 7-9pm at Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Street, Belconnen

Wednesday 25 June from 6-9pm at Lake Tuggeranong College, Colishaw Street, Tuggeranong

Yr 12 students completing an Accredited package

Before the End of Term 2 all students completing an Accredited package need to ensure that they see a year advisor in student services to complete an interview. Interviews are an opportunity to check package details and discuss options for semester two as well as beyond college.
 


Enrolment Timeline for 2009

  • 29 April - Online applications go live.                                                         
  • 20 June - Online applications close at midnight.
  • 25 July - Offers of placement despatched by colleges
  • 08 August - Students advise colleges of acceptance of placement
  • 15 August - Deadline for review of placement
  • 12 September Appeals close.
